πŸ“‹   Who We Are

Built for Patients,
Not Publishers

An independent global hospital ranking platform β€” no advertising from hospitals, no paid placements, no conflicts of interest. Just rigorous research in service of patients worldwide.

Why We Built This

Every year, millions of patients face the most consequential decisions of their lives β€” where to seek treatment for cancer, who to trust with a failing heart, which hospital has the expertise to diagnose a condition that has stumped everyone else. Most of them make that decision with inadequate information.

Hospital marketing is sophisticated. Brand recognition is powerful. Proximity is convenient. But none of these factors reliably predict whether a given hospital will produce good outcomes for a given patient with a given condition. What patients need is something different: independent, transparent, evidence-informed data on which hospitals genuinely excel β€” and in which specialties.

That gap is what we were built to fill. World Best Hospitals is an independent editorial platform dedicated to researching, verifying, and publishing global hospital rankings in a format that is accessible to patients, not just healthcare administrators. We are not funded by hospital systems, pharmaceutical companies, or medical device manufacturers. We do not accept payment to list, rank, or feature any institution. Every ranking we publish is the product of our own methodology β€” described in full on this page β€” and updated annually to reflect current data.

"A patient researching where to receive a bone marrow transplant deserves the same quality of information a stock analyst brings to an investment decision. We exist to close that gap."

β€” Editorial Team, World Best Hospitals

Our platform covers over 250 hospitals across 50 countries, ranked across dozens of specialties β€” from cardiovascular surgery and oncology to ophthalmology, psychiatry, and rare disease. We believe that access to reliable medical information is not a luxury. It is a basic precondition for informed consent, equitable care, and patient dignity.

🎯

Patient-First Focus

Every editorial decision we make starts with a single question: does this help a patient make a better-informed decision about their care?

πŸ”’

Editorial Independence

No hospital, health system, or investor influences our rankings. Our editorial team operates with full independence from our commercial partners.

🌍

Global Scope

We rank institutions across six continents β€” recognizing that world-class medicine is not the exclusive property of any one country or health system.

πŸ“Š

Data Transparency

Our methodology is published in full and updated annually. We disclose our data sources, weighting models, and the limitations of our approach.

Our Methodology

Rankings are built on a weighted composite of six independently verified data categories. No hospital can influence its score through payment, lobbying, or outreach to our team.

01

Peer Reputation Surveys

Weight: 35%

Annual surveys of over 40,000 medical specialists worldwide β€” physicians, surgeons, and clinical researchers β€” who nominate institutions with demonstrably superior performance in their own specialty. Respondents cannot nominate their own institutions.

02

Patient Outcome Metrics

Weight: 25%

Objective clinical performance data including 30-day mortality rates, surgical complication rates, readmission rates, and procedure-specific survival statistics sourced from national registries and hospital disclosure reports.

03

Research Output & Impact

Weight: 15%

Volume of peer-reviewed publications, citation impact scores, active clinical trial enrollment, NIH and equivalent grant funding levels, and the number of first-in-human or landmark procedures performed at each institution.

04

International Accreditation

Weight: 10%

Verified accreditation status from the Joint Commission International (JCI), Accreditation Canada, and equivalent bodies. ISO certifications and compliance with WHO patient safety standards are also factored.

05

Technology & Innovation Index

Weight: 10%

Assessment of AI diagnostic tool deployment, robotic surgery program scope, electronic health record integration, telemedicine infrastructure maturity, and demonstrated adoption of evidence-based novel technologies.

06

Patient Experience Scores

Weight: 5%

Independently verified patient satisfaction data, average inpatient wait times, multilingual support availability, accessibility infrastructure, and long-term follow-up care provisions for domestic and international patients.

Our Core Values

The principles that guide every ranking, every article, and every editorial decision we make.

βš–οΈ
Independence Our rankings cannot be purchased, influenced, or altered by any hospital or sponsor.
πŸ”
Transparency Full methodology disclosure β€” every weight, every source, every limitation, publicly stated.
🌐
Inclusivity We rank institutions across every continent β€” not just English-speaking Western nations.
πŸ“…
Currency Rankings are refreshed annually. We do not rely on legacy reputation that may no longer reflect current performance.
πŸ§ͺ
Rigor Peer surveys, clinical outcome data, and accreditation records β€” not marketing materials or press releases.
🀝
Accessibility We write for patients β€” not administrators or academics. Plain language, clear conclusions, actionable information.

Beyond the Top Ten List

The global hospital rankings landscape is dominated by a handful of well-known lists focused almost exclusively on U.S. institutions. We believe this is a disservice to the millions of patients who live outside North America β€” and to the many extraordinary hospitals in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and beyond that operate at the global frontier of medicine but receive disproportionately little attention.

Our platform covers institutions across six continents. We have profiled hospitals in Germany, Japan, Singapore, Israel, Australia, Brazil, India, and across the Gulf β€” not because it is trendy to do so, but because patients from these regions deserve rankings that reflect the actual quality of their domestic options, not just a list optimized for American readers.

Beyond our annual overall rankings, we publish specialty-specific rankings β€” allowing a patient with a rare neurological condition to identify the top ten institutions globally for that specific condition, rather than having to infer relevance from a general ranking that weights cardiac surgery heavily.

How We Got Here

World Best Hospitals began as a small research project and grew into one of the most comprehensive independent hospital ranking platforms on the internet.

2018
The Project Begins

A small team of medical journalists and data analysts begins compiling a global hospital database β€” frustrated by the lack of transparent, internationally-scoped ranking resources available to patients outside the United States.

2019
First Peer Survey Launched

We conduct our first international peer survey of 8,000 medical specialists across 30 countries β€” establishing the foundation of our reputation-based ranking component and identifying critical gaps in existing ranking methodologies.

2021
Methodology Peer-Reviewed

Our ranking methodology is reviewed and validated by an independent panel of health economists and biostatisticians. Weighting models and data sources are revised and published in full for the first time β€” a commitment to transparency we have maintained ever since.

2023
Expanded to 250+ Hospitals in 50 Countries

Platform coverage expands significantly to include institutions across Asia-Pacific, Latin America, the Middle East, and sub-Saharan Africa β€” making our rankings among the geographically broadest available to patients anywhere in the world.

2026
2026 Edition β€” AI-Augmented Outcome Verification

The 2026 ranking cycle introduces AI-assisted verification of clinical outcome data β€” cross-referencing hospital-reported statistics against national registry records and peer-reviewed literature to reduce the risk of data manipulation or misreporting.

The People Behind the Rankings

Our core team combines backgrounds in medical journalism, health policy research, epidemiology, and data science β€” united by a shared conviction that patients deserve better information.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are your hospital rankings paid for or sponsored by hospitals?
No. We do not accept payment from any hospital, health system, or related commercial entity in exchange for rankings, placement, or features on our platform. Our editorial team operates under a strict conflict-of-interest policy. The platform is funded through contextual advertising from third-party ad networks β€” none of which are operated by or affiliated with the hospitals we cover.
How often are the rankings updated?
Our rankings are fully refreshed on an annual cycle. The primary peer survey is conducted in the second half of each calendar year, and updated rankings are published in the first quarter of the following year. Between annual updates, individual hospital profiles may be updated to reflect significant changes in leadership, accreditation status, or major clinical programs.
Can a hospital request to be included in your rankings?
Hospitals cannot pay to be included, but institutions that believe they meet our ranking criteria are welcome to submit data for review. Submission does not guarantee inclusion and does not influence our editorial assessment. All submitted data is independently verified before being incorporated into any ranking calculation.
How should I use your rankings when making a healthcare decision?
Our rankings are a research starting point, not a clinical prescription. They are designed to help patients identify institutions with documented strengths in particular specialties β€” not to replace the judgment of their personal physicians. For any treatment decision, we strongly recommend discussing options with your primary care provider, who can factor in your specific diagnosis, insurance coverage, geographic proximity, and individual health history.
Why do your rankings include hospitals outside the United States?
Because excellent medicine is not geographically exclusive. Institutions such as CharitΓ© in Berlin, Singapore General Hospital, Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem, and the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein in SΓ£o Paulo operate at a global standard that rivals any U.S. hospital in their areas of specialization. A patient in Germany, Singapore, or Brazil deserves access to ranking data that reflects genuinely global performance β€” not a list built around American benchmarks and American readers.
How can I contact your editorial team?
We welcome correspondence from readers, clinicians, hospital administrators, and researchers. Our editorial team can be reached via the contact form on our Contact page. We respond to all substantive inquiries within five business days. For data corrections or concerns about factual accuracy in a hospital profile, please include supporting documentation in your message.
