Why We Built This
Every year, millions of patients face the most consequential decisions of their lives — where to seek treatment for cancer, who to trust with a failing heart, which hospital has the expertise to diagnose a condition that has stumped everyone else. Most of them make that decision with inadequate information.
Hospital marketing is sophisticated. Brand recognition is powerful. Proximity is convenient. But none of these factors reliably predict whether a given hospital will produce good outcomes for a given patient with a given condition. What patients need is something different: independent, transparent, evidence-informed data on which hospitals genuinely excel — and in which specialties.
That gap is what we were built to fill. World Best Hospitals is an independent editorial platform dedicated to researching, verifying, and publishing global hospital rankings in a format that is accessible to patients, not just healthcare administrators. We are not funded by hospital systems, pharmaceutical companies, or medical device manufacturers. We do not accept payment to list, rank, or feature any institution. Every ranking we publish is the product of our own methodology — described in full on this page — and updated annually to reflect current data.

How We Got Here
World Best Hospitals began as a small research project and grew into one of the most comprehensive independent hospital ranking platforms on the internet.
2018
The Project Begins
A small team of medical journalists and data analysts begins compiling a global hospital database — frustrated by the lack of transparent, internationally-scoped ranking resources available to patients outside the United States.
2019
First Peer Survey Launched
We conduct our first international peer survey of 8,000 medical specialists across 30 countries — establishing the foundation of our reputation-based ranking component and identifying critical gaps in existing ranking methodologies.
2021
Methodology Peer-Reviewed
Our ranking methodology is reviewed and validated by an independent panel of health economists and biostatisticians. Weighting models and data sources are revised and published in full for the first time — a commitment to transparency we have maintained ever since.
